Japanese Imari Charger
Description: A Japanese Imari charger that is intricately painted in underglaze blue, iron red, green, and gilt and contains an elaborate phoenix, peony, and dragon motif. There is reverse scroll that was painted in underglaze blue, iron red, green, and gilt, and three spur marks. The charger was made as an ordered article or presentation piece, which would have been used in the house of the nobility, feudal lord or the home of a military dictator for a special occasion such as a wedding or 60th birthday.
